I don’t think I’m going out on a limb here by saying that GM is dying because it never became lean enough. It did not hone its ability to sense customer demand and shift production quickly. It did not trim the voluminous expenditures it makes on its labor force. It overproduced inventories of gas-gulpers as customers turned to fuel-sippers.
The problems plaguing Detroit have been long in the making, and a cash infusion from Washington now won’t cure them or reverse them...
