Joe Barkai is program director for Manufacturing Insights' Product Life-Cycle Strategies research service. In this role he is responsible for research and analysis on the types of investments that introduce operational efficiencies to the domain while improving the responsiveness to customer requirements. Mr. Barkai examines discrete manufacturing, with a focus on complex, mission-critical capital equipment to identify business imperatives, best practices and emerging technologies. Mr. Barkai's near term activities will focus on the automotive, agricultural, and construction equipment industries, and his research topics will include warranty cost containment, the creation of agile manufacturing and service organizations, and effective product lifecycle management, Service Lifecycle Management, and the process integration of the two. A senior executive with over 20 years industry experience in product management, marketing, and business development, Mr. Barkai is a thought leader with strong focus on the business value of technology in manufacturing and customer service. Prior to joining Manufacturing Insights, Mr. Barkai was the founder and principal at Diagnostic Strategies, where he provided management and technology consulting to manufacturing and service organizations of Fortune and Global companies concerning strategy, operation, and technologies. His responsibilities in this role included offering clients strategy assessment and realignment, operational analysis and improvement, business process reengineering, technology benchmarking, and technology insertion.

Jim has over 25 years of experience in management and technology leadership. Prior to joining Invention Machine, Jim was with Vality Technology Inc. where he served as the Chief Technology Officer and Vice President of Engineering and Client Services. Prior to Vality Technology, Jim spent more than 15 years at Ardent Software where he held various technology and management positions and was the inventor of Ardent Software's flagship database technology. Jim joined Ardent when he sold his company, Alfa Computer Enterprises, to Ardent. Prior to Alfa Computer, Jim held various positions at NCR Comten, Inc., Midas Systems Corp., and the University of California, Irvine. Jim holds an M.S. in Information and Computer Science from the University of California, Irvine.
