xTuple today unveiled version 3.5 of its eponymous ERP software, designed to automate manual routine tasks and thereby save small and mid-sized manufacturers time and money.

The provider of Macintosh and open-source ERP software for the SMB market, formerly OpenMFG, has added to the software higher-end functionality, such as cloud computing, time and expense management, increased support for tooling, and embedded MetaSQL editing, capitalizing on what it said were economies provided by open-source development.

“The reality is many SMBs today are limited largely to moving ahead tactically, rather than strategically,” said Jay Lyman, enterprise software analyst for The 451 Group, in a statement. “This can be particularly true with desktop financial applications, but by leveraging higher-end ERP and CRM features that are still affordable thanks in large part to open source, they can consolidate steps and operate more strategically and effectively.”

Users of the open-source PostBooks Edition of xTuple’s ERP suite now can run their xTuple database in the cloud using Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. During April, xTuple will provide the cloud service free of charge and invite user feedback for its eventual commercial service. Open source ERP provider Compiere last year made a similar move to the cloud via Amazon’s technology.
