UGS Buys Technology for Shape Searching

    NEW YORK -- With an eye toward helping manufacturers boost parts reusability, UGS Corp. yesterday disclosed that it has acquired technology from a German software development and consulting firm that enables design engineers to search for 3D models by specifying component shape. Terms of the deal were not disclosed.

    The acquisition was one of numerous announcements made at the company's annual Analyst & Media Forum held here. For example, UGS disclosed updates for its flagship Teamcenter 2005 PLM software portfolio and enhancements to the digital manufacturing software suite that the Plano, TX, company acquired last year from Tecnomatix.

    The flurry of announcements came as UGS continues to flex its muscles two years after being spun off from EDS Corp. in a private equity deal valued at roughly $2 billion. The PLM company cracked the billion-dollar mark in 2005 and recently extended its revenue growth run to eleven consecutive quarters.
