Anticipating that Apple’s iPhone will become an important tool in enterprise mobility, Sybase today announced that its device management platform will support the latest version of the iPhone operating system, the first to allow third-party applications access to and direct control of the popular Apple smart phone.

The upcoming release of Sybase’s Afaria software will come with full mobile device management and security for the just-released iOS 4, allowing IT teams to manage applications and secure the iPhone 4 or the iPad over the air while separating personal and enterprise information, the company said.

Afaria’s support for Apple devices will include simplified delivery of enterprise applications; separation of personal and enterprise information; comprehensive iOS management; and what Sybase bills as greater transparency and control.

In the past, iPhone users could only access applications delivered via iTunes or published in Apple’s App Store. With Afaria for iOS 4, enterprises will be able to wirelessly transmit applications straight to employees’ iPhones.
