In a surprise move, HP today said its board has selected former SAP AG CEO Leo Apotheker as its new CEO and president, replacing recently ousted Mark Hurd.

HP also said it has selected software industry veteran Ray Lane as its non-executive chairman, filling the position in Hurd’s wake.

The appointments are scheduled to go into effect Nov. 1.

The moves indicate a likely acceleration of HP’s acquisition activity, particularly more involvement with enterprise software, said industry experts today.
