Software AG, an IT infrastructure software vendor, this week introduced technology that moves the monolithic mainframe into the era of service-oriented architectures. The product, dubbed webMethods Application Modernization Suite, applies the same SOA governance and lifecycle management policies to legacy applications that are used with Web-based composite applications.

To date, companies have had options for integrating mainframe systems into SOA via Web-enablement applications, but many of the solutions have been simply a bridge between the old and the new computing infrastructures. Software AG, which has a long history in the mainframe environment and built out its SOA expertise with the 2007 acquisition of webMethods, brings to the table a product suite that includes an enterprise service bus (ESB) and a service registry and lifecycle governance component, which can manage mainframe assets within the enterprise SOA model, officials said.

"From our perspective, we wanted to really help our customers get to a true SOA, and we thought the existing modernization solutions out there are tactical Web enablement solutions that just do data integration, but don't provide the orchestration and ESB that is needed," said Sandra Wade, Software AG's senior director of product marketing, in an interview with Managing Automation.
