Siemens Acquires French MES Specialist Elan

Latest push into industrial software targets the biotech and pharmaceutical sectors.

German automation giant Siemens has acquired French MES software provider Elan Software Systems SA, marking the latest move by Siemens to build its product stable into a set of integrated hardware and software offerings that cover various aspects of manufacturing from design through the shop floor and enterprise.

Neither company revealed the purchase price.

Toulouse-based Elan, which is privately held, makes manufacturing execution software for the pharmaceutical and biotech industries. It has 60 employees. Its customers include the L’Occitane en Provence group as well as Baxter, Takeda, Sanofi Aventis, Rochas, and Yves Rocher.

Elan pads out Siemens’ MES suite, which already includes the Simatic IT range that Siemens began building with its 2001 acquisition of Italian MES vendor Orsi.
