Enterprise software leader SAP AG today launched a series of sustainability initiatives, including a new environmental, health, and safety (EHS) software product that the company said will complement its existing governance, risk, and compliance products.

At the same time, SAP announced new internal initiatives intended to make the software company itself a leader in sustainable behavior and reporting. Those initiatives include appointment of the company’s first chief sustainability officer and the publication of specific greenhouse gas emission reduction goals.

SAP named former Executive Vice President for Solutions Marketing Peter Graf as its new chief sustainability officer, reporting to SAP Executive Board member Jim Hagemann Snabe.

“SAP is playing a dual role [on sustainability],” Graf told Managing Automation in an interview today. “In order to do anything, we need to start with ourselves. But the carbon footprint of our installed base is 10,000 times larger than our own. So the real opportunity is to help those 82,000 companies understand and implement sustainability best practices.”
