In a deal that may reflect the next step in the maturation of the machine-to-machine market, QUALCOMM, Inc., a provider of wireless communications products and services, has acquired nPhase, a developer of M2M products that enable companies to manage fixed machine assets. Terms of the acquisition weren't disclosed.

nPhase, a Chicago-based company that was formed in 2003 as a spinout of Professional Consulting Services, an IT consulting firm, offers a tailored remote management product that enables product companies to develop what nPhase calls "smart services." ABB Robotics, for example, uses nPhase's wireless monitoring products to deliver key data about its robots to service technicians via the Internet.

QUALCOMM's Wireless Business Solutions unit, of which nPhase is now part, offers what are known as fixed telemetry products for interconnecting machines with IT infrastructure and mobile work forces.
