Oracle used its OpenWorld 2008 conference this week as a platform to unveil upgrades to its ERP offerings, while partners AT&T, Axeda, and Capgemini used the huge gathering in San Francisco to announce products and services in the areas of mobility, remote service management, and supply and demand planning.

Oracle announced upgrades to its JD Edwards EnterpriseOne ERP suite as well as the underlying application infrastructure, called EnterpriseOne Tools.

EnterpriseOne 9.0, the latest release, includes a new Project and Government Contract Accounting module geared toward engineering and construction and professional project-oriented services that must abide by U.S. government standards.

The module provides advanced project accounting integrated with an enterprise's general ledger to enable delivery of data for improved compliance and financial management. In addition, a new data relationship function assigns correct values to entered information. For example, data can be entered using customer-defined rules to help eliminate the possibility that inconsistencies, abbreviations, or incorrect spellings are captured.

Version 9.0 includes industry-specific capabilities for engineering and construction, food and beverage, commercial real estate, industrial manufacturing, and professional services. It has also been enhanced in the area of financial management, supply chain management, and human resource management, the company said.

In addition, the technology infrastructure upon which the applications sit has been upgraded. EnterpriseOne Tools 8.98 includes a new customer-driven user interface; more standards support, such as Web Services for Remote Portlets (WSRP) and Java Database Connectivity (JDBC); and improved management between EnterpriseOne batch process and reports.

Similarly, Oracle this week announced that its JD Edwards World enterprise applications for the IBM System i platform is now available with pre-built integration to the company's Demantra Demand Management application, adding advanced forecasting and analytical capabilities that can help ensure cost-effective production planning and global supply chain management.

The pre-built integration is available for JD Edwards World release A9.1 and enables organizations to automate the extraction of sales and sales history data from JD Edwards World into Oracle's Demantra; leverage Demantra to perform sophisticated analytics and advanced forecasting calculations to create highly accurate demand forecasts; and apply forecast information back into JD Edwards World Requirements Planning applications to help eliminate latency in decision-making by focusing on excellence in demand visibility, improving forecast accuracy, and shaping demand.

In other news at the show:

  • AT&T announced new capabilities for its Mobile Enterprise Applications, broadening its ability to deliver line-of-business mobile applications. Working with Antenna Software, AT&T said it is making it easier for companies to manage complex mobile enterprises.

AT&T, which delivers sales force automation, field force automation, and IT support applications to a number of industries, including manufacturing, is positioning itself as a single point of contact for managing the complex infrastructure. AT&T will host the applications for customers at its own data center, providing on-demand access, or, by leveraging the Antenna Mobility Platform (AMP), companies can run applications on premise behind their own firewall. AMP is designed to work with an existing IT infrastructure, serving as the central hub for data, devices, development, and management of mobile applications.
