Intermodal shipment and inventory tracking service provider Savi Networks this week announced the addition of a new wireless cargo tracking device for use within the company’s supply chain intelligence service, SaviTrak.

The new device, developed by an unidentified third party, is described as a tag that includes GPS, cellular, active RFID, and sensor capabilities. Companies using the tag with the SaviTrak service will be able to access real-time intelligence on the global location, security, and condition of inventory within “high-risk/high-value” container shipments, Savi said.

The tag, when affixed to a container door, receives GPS location information at specified time intervals. In addition, sensors embedded in the tag can detect and record details of security breaches, including whether a door was opened and in what manner — for example, whether it was lifted off its hinges — according to Nick Cova, vice president of Savi Networks’ commercial operations and SaviTrak. The device can also monitor internal container conditions, including temperature and humidity.

The tag joins nine other third-party shipping container monitoring devices that the company has certified for use with the SaviTrak intelligence service.
