Digital security technology provider Secure Computing today announced the availability of three new SCADA-specific security signatures as part of its Secure Firewall product. Secure Firewall, formerly known as Sidewinder, is used to protect conventional IT networks, the company said, and the addition of the three signature file types adds SCADA-specific protocols to its functionality.

“Critical infrastructure is under intense scrutiny by regulators and hackers alike,” said Elan Winkler, director of critical infrastructure solutions at Secure Computing, in a statement introducing the products. “Most security devices aren’t designed to ... prevent attacks against critical control networks.”

Security signatures, which monitor network and application-specific traffic for malicious behavior and attacks, can react in real time to block or prevent such activities, Winkler said.

“For example, they can detect an attempt to force an application or a piece of network equipment to restart or shut off, or if an unauthorized client attempts to read/write to a device,” he told Managing Automation.
