Motorola Inc.’s Enterprise Mobility Solutions division, perhaps better known in manufacturing circles for its rugged handhelds for plant personnel, yesterday unveiled a business-class smart phone aimed at enterprise professionals in manufacturing and other industries.

The ES400 Enterprise Digital Assistant is said to combine mobile computing and push-to-talk functionality in a compact, lightweight unit, enabling managers and mobile workers to collect data and securely access business applications and back-end systems from the field. It runs on the Sprint 3G network and is built on the Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.5 platform.

A customizable interface, called the Motorola Enterprise User Interface (MEUI), provides one-touch access to applications, a business-focused home screen, a one-touch 1D and 2D bar-code scanner, an enterprise-class camera application with photo annotation capability, a simplified call management screen, and readily accessible device management tabs so that users don’t have to drill down through multiple menus and screens to adjust settings.

“Motorola recognizes that mobile teams are the lifeblood of an organization, and empowering those teams with unmatched features and functionality to eliminate roadblocks in the field is critical to an organization,” said Gene Delaney, president of Motorola Enterprise Mobility Solutions, in a statement. The new device offers “mobile workforces the ability to take action and capture information with a single click — in front of the customer where it counts most.”
