SAN DIEGO—Aiming to grab larger shares of the fast-growing business intelligence and analytics space, market leaders IBM and Teradata yesterday unveiled important new releases of their core software and hardware products.

IBM rolled out a faster version of its DB2 relational database management software and a new release of its Cognos business intelligence software that it said makes analytics easier to use and easier to share through social networking.

For its part, Teradata unveiled a new version of its database management software that enables a wide range of new analytics tools that make use of temporal and spatial information. Teradata also responded to growing competition from hardware vendors such as Oracle, HP, and IBM by introducing a new generation of its database hardware platforms and appliances that makes use of the latest Intel Xeon microprocessors.

At the center of the new Teradata products, unveiled at the company’s annual Partners conference here, was release 13.10 of the company’s database software. The release adds the ability to track temporal and spatial data without requiring time-consuming programming. Teradata software partners will create analytic applications that take advantage of the new temporal and spatial support. Partner APOS Systems Inc., for instance, is offering a new tool, the APOS Location Intelligence Solution: Teradata Edition, that uses geospatial maps stored in the Teradata database to produce spatial analytics and reports.
