ERP provider Epicor Software opened its third-quarter books slightly today, offering an upbeat preview of its full-quarter results that included year-over-year revenue growth of approximately 12% and a big boost in license sales of its ERP software.

Epicor said it expects total revenue for the three months ended Sept. 30 to be $109 million to $111 million, which would represent an 11%-13% improvement over its tally in Q3 of 2009 and would exceed Epicor’s earlier guidance. ERP license sales are expected to be a much larger component of that figure, having risen 40%-45% in this year’s third quarter to $19 million to $20 million, a vast improvement on last year’s $13.7 million. Officials said the results were largely attributable to brisk sales of Epicor 9, the company’s flagship ERP suite.

However, the strong improvement over its 2009 sales performance still leaves Epicor well shy of its 2008 results, when it logged $135.8 million in revenue in the third quarter. As for the bottom line, Epicor said it expects earnings per share of $0.13 to $0.15 in the quarter, which would hew to the top end of its previous guidance.

Epicor develops its ERP offerings primarily for mid-market companies in manufacturing and other industries. In a ThomasNet survey released this week, mid-market manufacturers reported a healthy uptick in business activity in recent months, a development that many said has inspired them to increase their technology spending.
