Consona Corp. today said it has acquired open source, cloud-based ERP and CRM software provider Compiere Inc., a move that will expand Consona’s nascent cloud strategy.

Consona, a privately owned provider of ERP and CRM software that, since 2003, has grown through acquisition, said it bought Compiere for an undisclosed quantity of stock.

Compiere, based in Redwood Shores, CA, focuses on manufacturing, distribution, retail, publishing, healthcare, pharmaceutical, and government markets. The company claims 130 customers, although it says there have been 1.4 million downloads of its open source applications. Manufacturing customers include electronic components manufacturer Pertronix and water purification equipment manufacturer O-So Pure.

Consona CTO Steve Bailey, in a prepared statement, said Compiere’s multi-tenant architecture, which is at the heart of its cloud-based offering, is what most attracted Consona to the deal. The Compiere architecture is based on an open source technology stack, including Java, Linux, the JBOSS application server, and the Postgres database. Compiere also uses an advanced Web 2.0 user interface that is based on the Google Web Toolkit. The architecture allows Compiere to offer its applications as private tenant, cloud-based services while also giving customers the ability to create application customizations that are automatically supported in each new release of the application.
