Agile COO Promoted to CEO

    In what company executives called a "planned succession," PLM provider Agile Software Corp. has promoted Jay Fulcher, its chief operating officer, to CEO, succeeding Bryan Stolle, who will remain the company's chairman.

    The transition, effective May 1, is part of a long-term plan to take Agile, of San Jose, CA, to its next chapter of development and to accommodate market changes that increasingly discourage having one top executive serving both roles, Fulcher said in an interview with Managing Automation. "This business has opportunity for scale and growth, which requires more depth and breadth on the management team," Fulcher explained.

    There's nothing unique about what Agile is doing from a management perspective, he maintained. "It's becoming more of a best practice that a chairman lead the activities of the board from a governance perspective, while the CEO focuses on all aspects of running the business and the strategic direction of where the business is headed," Fulcher said. "A CEO can get distracted from running the business if [he or she] gets subsumed into that work ..."
