If you are shopping around for a product lifecycle management system, here's one more question to add to the RFP beyond the typical feature/function inquiry: What's the deployment method?
The obvious answer is on-premise or on-demand. But manufacturers may want to dig a little deeper because the PLM offerings available today can't be summed up quite so easily. Several different flavors of PLM deployment are emerging that may well influence your selection.
Web-based technology has allowed PLM vendors to be more creative in the way they provide access to their software. For example, when the traditional behind-the-firewall licensed model is coupled with collaborative technology, such as Microsoft Office SharePoint Server, an on-premise PLM system can become a wide-reaching Web portal that eases communication with partners and suppliers.
