1) Decide what needs to change.
2) Break the business process down, simplify it, and then define the way the process should work via a flowchart or other illustration.
3) Create a theoretical model of best practices and standards based on new business processes and procedures.
4) Enlist a leadership team and assign clear responsibilities aimed at achieving goals.
5) Track implementation and measure through benchmarking, scorecards, and other tools.
6) After business processes are formalized, adopt standard technology platforms in the enterprise and the plant.
7) Begin to bridge the gap between the plant floor and the enterprise by tapping into industry standards, service-oriented architectures, or middleware that allows the efficient exchange of data between the two environments.
8) Create a methodology for continuous improvement and training.
