1) Start small, take a phased approach. 2) Start early and look for ROI from the beginning by considering how RFID solves business problems. Study business processes to identify where the more granular information collected from RFID tags on pallets, cases or individual products could add value. Engage supply chain partners in identifying what information needs to be shared. 3) Learn as much as possible about RFID technology and any mandates from your customers. 4) Set up a cross-functional team. Include representatives from partners and vendors. 5) Identify the sources and volumes of products to be tagged to comply with customer mandates. Determine how this volume is likely to change over time. 6) Wait until pilot testing identifies the optimum combinations of tags, equipment and software for your products before placing orders. Place orders as soon as optimum products are identified to compensate for any unexpectedly long lead times due to high demand or capacity constraints. 7) Insist that equipment and software have a low-cost or no-cost migration path to Gen 2 tags. Avoid long-term tag contracts. 8) Plan for integration with back-end systems, even if the linkages won't be live right away. 9) Don't skimp on training, and make sure it includes hands-on experience. 10) Maintain a positive attitude toward RFID.
