Wireless technology provider Sybase Inc., an SAP company, has announced a new version of its mobile enterprise application platform that the company says will accelerate software development.

Sybase Unwired Platform 2.1 includes enhancements to its software development kit (SDK) that use industry standards to provide a more unified way to create mobile applications for a variety of devices. In addition, the company said, when version 2.1 becomes available at the end of the year, it will support data integration with SAP’s back-end enterprise systems through the SAP NetWeaver Gateway technology.

An earlier version of the Unwired Platform included an SAP connectivity plug-in to tap into SAP data sources and build mobile applications for SAP CRM, ERP, and other enterprise applications. That version, announced last year, also provided business process workflows.

The latest mobile SDK update extends these wireless networking capabilities by offering a collection of new tools, server components, and libraries that will enable developers to create a wide variety of mobile applications for platforms such as Apple’s iOS, BlackBerry, Android, and Windows Mobile.
