Over the next three years, the use of smart phones in business will increase at a rate four times greater than that of notebook computers, and business applications deployed on smart phones will grow at twice the rate of those deployed on notebooks, according to a research report from J. Gold Associates, LLC.

In “Enterprise Mobile Applications: A Study of Strategies and Adoption Trends,” the technology analyst firm polled more than 340 large and small companies in North America and Western Europe about their plans for adopting mobile technologies. Respondents indicated that the number of smart phones deployed in their organizations would increase 30% in one year and 100% in three years. And access to corporate applications from these devices is expected to grow 71% in one year and 196% in three years.

Meanwhile, respondents said the number of notebooks would remain flat one year out and would increase 25% in three years. Access to corporate applications from notebooks is expected to increase 75% in one year and 100% in three years.

The findings also detail the types and number of mobile projects that companies are planning, the vendors they are selecting, their spending estimates, planned ROI, and anticipated cost savings.
