Airo Wireless, a maker of ruggedized cell phones, has unveiled the Airo A25is, its first intrinsically safe phone certified for use in hazardous environments.
Developed in conjunction with Cinterion Wireless Modules, a provider of cellular machine-to-machine (M2M) communications modules, the Airo A25is has passed rigorous safety testing required for UL 913 (North America) “intrinsically safe” certification and meets rugged military specifications (MIL-SPEC 810-F/G), Airo Wireless said.
The cell phone, which includes Cinterion’s MC75i Evolution Platform module for reliable wireless communication, was designed to eliminate or encapsulate any component that could produce sparks or generate enough heat to cause inflammable gases, dust, or fuel to ignite. Approved for use on GSM networks around the world — and recently certified for AT&T's wireless network — Airo A25is combines voice, built-in GPS, push-to-talk (PTT), and enterprise data telematics.
“The A25is device was designed to maximize productivity and also withstand potential exposure to water, dirt, harsh chemicals, extreme temperatures, and general tough use from bumps, drops, and vibration,” said Jeoff Moore, director of sales for Airo Wireless, in a statement.
