Motorola has unveiled a rugged, handheld mobile computer designed to increase field service productivity and reduce the total cost of ownership for industrial enterprises.
The MC9500 builds upon the company’s earlier MC9000 model and offers form and functionality enhancements, many of which were developed in collaboration with customers, Motorola executives said at a recent press conference held at the Museum of Arts & Design in New York.
Among the new features are a 3.7-inch color, high-resolution VGA display; one-handed use; four modular keypad options; a screen that orients itself to either portrait or landscape mode, depending on the task, such as obtaining a customer signature; a sensing technology that logs when the device is dropped and that switches to sleep mode if the device is face-down or not in use; customer-swappable WAN options; battery life and battery charge indicators, which save backroom setup time and inventory costs and ensure that the units will be operational for entire work shifts; and a universal accessory storage and recharging system for backroom efficiency and space optimization.
The 9500 computer provides modular 3.5G WAN with support for GSM-HSDPA or CDMA-EVDO Rev A wireless broadband connectivity. This gives companies the flexibility to provide coverage in different geographies using the same set of devices.
