Investment in business intelligence and performance management technology by U.S companies is expected to markedly outstrip investment in other areas by 2010, according to a recent report by AMR Research.

The report, based on a survey of 495 U.S. manufacturing and service companies with 1,000 or more employees, indicated that 19% of companies will consider BI or performance management their most strategically important enterprise application investment by 2010, while 15% reported that customer management will be their top priority by 2010. Other categories — including product lifecycle management (PLM); governance, risk management, and compliance (GRC); ERP; manufacturing operations; supply chain management; knowledge and content management; human capital management; and sourcing and procurement — shared priority rankings of 6% to 10% of companies.

By contrast, in 2008, customer management will be the top priority at 16% of companies, according to AMR, followed by ERP and GRC (13% of companies each). BI/performance management occupies the top spot at just 11% of companies in 2008.
