Users of Managing Automation’s TechMATCH tool provided a window into technology buying intentions over the past couple of months, and the data shows that traditional, big-budget software is still front-of-mind for many manufacturers.

The most popular technology area within TechMATCH in January was the manufacturing execution systems (MES) category, a perennial top-three technology category among manufacturing buyers. In second place was product lifecycle management (PLM) software, an area of interest for manufacturers looking to control product information as BOMs grow increasingly complex. The third most popular software category was enterprise resource planning (ERP), a name practically synonymous with enterprise applications.

The fourth spot served up a surprise, with RFID software beating out more established technologies such as business and manufacturing intelligence software. Meanwhile, business process integration (BPI), which helps companies marry disparate systems in service of streamlined processes, saw strong interest from TechMATCH users, garnering the number 7 slot.
