Dust Networks, a provider of wireless networking products, recently rolled out its SmartMesh IP wireless sensor network (WSN) technology, providing manufacturers with an industrial-strength wireless infrastructure that can be used in the enterprise.

SmartMesh IP uses Dust Networks’ Time Synchronized Mesh Protocol (TSMP), which is compatible with the IEEE 2.4 GHz 802.15.4-2006 radio standard, and combines it with the Internet Protocol (IP) for a standards-based offering that can be used for a variety of applications, the company said.

The TSMP technology, currently used with the WirelessHART and ISA100.11a industrial network standards, is said to be the foundational building block that turns every sensor node into a router than can transmit and receive data. Built-in intelligence enables the mesh network to self-form and self-maintain so that there is no single point of failure, which has attracted manufacturers to the technology for use with wireless industrial applications that require reliability.

“With their new IP-based product, enterprise customers can benefit from the same low power and reliability that industrial customers have relied on for years,” said Harry Forbes, senior analyst with ARC Advisory Group, in a statement.
