With the introduction of its new Tempo interface this week, business process management software purveyor Appian sought to tap into the growing popularity of social media technologies to bolster its BPM offering.

Pursuing what it calls Mobile BPM, Appian’s latest business process management suite brings collaborative capabilities to the Apple iPad and iPhone, as well as BlackBerry devices. An Android version is forthcoming, the company said in a statement.

“Mobile BPM allows employees to stay connected, informed, and empowered to make important business decisions regardless of where they are,” Appian said. “It also extends BPM participation beyond pre-defined process participants to include all levels of the organization.”

The social BPM capabilities built into the latest offering allow employees and partners to create customized views of business processes based on relevant application or process areas, and also to subscribe to feeds of key events and information. The latest version of the Tempo interface borrows social media elements to enable ad hoc collaboration, unstructured processes, and unplanned business events, helping to streamline, for instance, the customer service case management process.
