Design software provider Autodesk recently said it will partner with a green product design software and information services company to offer an on-demand service that will help product designers understand the sustainability and environmental impact of new product designs at the prototype stage.

Autodesk is collaborating with Sustainable Minds LLC, a product design software and information services company. Sustainable Minds said it will develop an on-demand offering that enables designers to estimate a design's lifecycle environmental impact. The tool will use the Okala lifecycle assessment methodology, which scores product designs based on factors such as global warming impacts and CO2 emissions.

The Sustainable Minds on-demand service, the companies said, will complement Autodesk's Inventor 3D design system, which is used to create digital prototypes that can be evaluated and tested before a physical version of a new product is built. Users will be able to evaluate their digital designs, built in Inventory, using the Sustainable Minds service, the companies said.
