Ask the Manufacturing Execution Systems (MES) Expert: Scheduling Assistance

Asked on Apr 17 2006 7:28:31:000PM | Q | What CMMS software is leading the manufacturing facilities in Maintenace Excellence programs. I would like some comments and recommendations on the four software products which I am reviewing: Indus Empac, MP2, Cworks, & Ivara.
My application will be a enterprise based system in which information can be shared across multiple facilities.

| A | I'm afraid I can't offer a very satisfying response to your question, which seems to be posited on several unfounded assumptions: (a) that there is one "best" CMMS software solution that would work for every organization (including your own), regardless of organizational requirements, capabilities, and context; and (b) that this columnist will make specific recommendations to prospective buyers about software solutions, even in the absence of any requirements analysis. It would be irresponsible for any consultant to make a recommendation concerning software without a full understanding of your specific organizational situation. This is a non-trivial activity -- and the place where consultants can really earn their keep. The organization-specific knowledge must then be mapped to vendor/product-specific knowledge to generate a recommendation. This columnist won't make such recommendations (at least in the context of a public column). I view one of my jobs as helping you understand the differences between vendor capabilities, and how these differences may matter to organizations with different requirements. Finally, even with a thorough evaluation project, you might discover that the differences between vendors and products aren't as important as your own organizational readiness in achieving ultimate success. In a relatively mature software market (such as CMMS) this is a frequent outcome of such activities. Your email suggests you are an employee of Kroger. Kroger is a sixty billion dollar company. It has substantial assets to maintain; and substantial resources to support a thorough study of the question. This is a question worth spending serious time and money to clarify. |
