Q

Dear John, I am looking into RFID as a security solutions in Education. That is using it as a means for asset tracking and monitoring. Have you come accross with any application of this technology in the fashion? Could you refer me to the most likely company that my be able to provide such a solution? Your assistance is very much apprecited. Thank you in advance.

Angelo Luidens, Doral, FL
AAngelo: Asset tracking is a sweet spot for today's RFID technology. From cattle to reusable containers, beer kegs and hospital equipment, a host of suppliers offer solid solutions for the application.

To point you in the right direction, I'll need a bit more information. Can you give me an idea of the type and number of assets you'd like to track? Are you interested in identifying the assets as they are moved from one location to another, where they are in a facility or both?

If only the former, you might be able to address requirements with tags and handheld readers or fixed readers installed at access and egress points. If you'd like to know where they are at any point in time, you'll need an RTLS (Real-Time Locating System) using battery-operated tags and a wireless infrastructure within the facility (ies).

Let me know and I'll provide additional feedback.
