| A | There are many lessons that can be learned from the A380 delay. The first is the importance of having processes in place that enable companies to, early in the development phase, identify potential design, manufacturing and assembly problems. Second, when problems are identified (and the wiring problem was identified almost two years prior to production as reported in various publications such as Aviation Week and Space Technology) is to have management and processes that ensure that identified problems are addressed as early as possible to prevent costly downstream delays. While there will be some who say that having all designers/engineers use the same release of the design tools, this is not the core problem. Using different tools, or different releases of the same tool, is not the problem -- many very complex products have been successfully designed and produced using diverse tool suites. Failure to properly collaborate during the design process and to identify and address design issues early is the real issue. |
