Jeff Schaff, senior director of manufacturing and tech transfer processes at Wyeth Pharmaceuticals, is responsible for standardizing and coordinating manufacturing processes across 16 strategic sites around the world. The structured manufacturing execution system (MES) program was part of an enterprise system strategy for the manufacturing division. But starting up a worldwide MES program is not easy. Recently, Schaff spoke with Managing Automation Senior Editor Stephanie Neil about the technological, cultural, and business process issues that can impact a new MES initiative.

Hi, Are there any metrics about how much customization is necessary when implementing an off-the-shelf (packaged) MES product? I mean, if I have to customize the product to my company's operations processes, what is the percentage of changes/customization we have to do in the off-the-shelf product? Another question: Is it more common to use an off-the-shelf product or to develop a new one (maybe from scratch) when implementing an MES program/project? Is there any metrics about this last question?
