Get Lean With Next Logical Step

Posted on Monday, December, 18, 2006, 9:00AM

SAP's recent purchase of Factory Logic has implications for midmarket ERP vendors and paper-on-glass MES vendors alike. In this deal, SAP is augmenting its xMII manufacturing integration and intelligence system with Factory Logic's lean planning and kanban execution software. While SAP plans to initially target industries already embracing lean practices, such as aerospace and defense, automotive, high tech, industrial products, and medical equipment and devices, Factory Logic has just begun to add capabilities such as CONWIP and POLCA for the chemicals, consumer products, and pharmaceuticals industries. And in addition to SAP's direct efforts, it will also inherit the OEM agreement Factory Logic forged with the Automation and Drives Group of Siemens AG that embeds Factory Logic software in Siemens' surface mount (SMT) machines as part of its SIPLACE lean manufacturing system.
